Nashville’s Trace takes you from the back stages of Music City to its most famous back road, the Natchez Trace, a National Scenic Byway.
Nashville’s Trace Trail passes through eight counties along the historic Natchez Trace, beginning at Nashville’s Downtown Visitors’ Center. Your journey immediately takes you by Frist Center for the Visual Arts, with world-renowned exhibits, and then by The Parthenon – a full-scale replica of the Greek original. You’ll want to stop at Belle Meade Plantation, an 1820s home located on what was once a Thoroughbred horse farm. Today, in addition to tours of the mansion and grounds, experience a wonderful new winery. Cheekwood, a 55-acre botanical garden and art museum, sits two miles down the road.
Staying on Highway 100, you’ll pass Percy Warner Park and land at Loveless Cafe, famous for their biscuits, jams and Southern cooking. After shopping and a hearty meal, you’re ready to get on the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Vineyards & Amish Settlement
As you would take in Napa Valley when visiting San Francisco, embrace Nashville’s Trace and experience four wonderful wineries. Other agritourism offerings include Bonnie Blue Farm in Waynesboro, known for their award-winning goat cheese. Venture to Lawrence County and Amish Country, the South’s largest “Old Order Amish Settlement” where you can visit farms, purchase food and handmade crafts.
Discover the Trace’s rich history with legends like Meriwether Lewis, who died in 1809 and is buried at Grinder’s Stand (near Hohenwald). Step on the hallowed grounds of the Trail of Tears or celebrate Tennessee’s pioneer spirit at the David Crockett State Park in Lawrenceburg.
Stop at Shady Grove to see Jackson Falls, a beautiful waterfall named for President Andrew Jackson. In Collinwood, discover the “Gateway to Tennessee,” where you can visit the historic Train Depot. Be sure to tell Dorothy hello, a star at their welcome centre. Just minutes from the Trace, take in Franklin and Columbia with their history and small-town charm.
The Great Outdoors
Outdoor adventure awaits you on the Trace if you can take time for canoeing along the Harpeth, Duck or Buffalo rivers, or bring a bike and join other cyclists along the Trace. Some of Tennessee’s richest music heritage comes from venues like Puckett’s Grocery in Leipers Fork or Tarkington Store in Hickman County. To savour some heritage of the Grand Ole Opry, visit Centerville, home of Minnie Pearl.
