Itinerary

DAY 1 – Fly to Bozeman, MT

Arrive Bozeman and collect your rental car

Overnight: Bozeman

 

DAY 2 – Bozeman to Helena (100 miles)

Start your day with a visit to the Museum of the Rockies, home to one of the largest collections of dinosaur fossils in the U.S.  Then head north to Helena, Montana’s state capital. On arrival wander around the pleasant blocks of Last Chance Gulch, pop into the impressive State Capitol Building or view the fine collection in the Holter Museum of Art.

Overnight: Helena

 

DAY 3 – Helena to Glacier National Park to Whitefish (270 miles)

Start your day with a boat trip through the Gates of the Mountains, an enchanting experience meandering down a spectacular stretch of the Missouri River with towering rock cliffs along either side of you. Continue to Glacier National Park entering from the North-East area to enjoy the magnificent 85km drive along the Going to The Sun Road to get your first glimpses of what the park has to offer. Spend your evening in the picturesque mountain town of Whitefish, soak up the bustling atmosphere in one of the local restaurants followed by a drink in a nearby saloon.

Overnight: Whitefish

 

DAY 4 – Glacier National Park

Spend a full day exploring the ‘Crown of the Continent’ to discover glacial-scoured valleys, towering peaks, tumbling waterfalls, verdant forests and wildflower-strewn meadows. Hike some of the 700 miles of trails and keep an eye out for resident wildlife including bears, elk, mountain goats and bighorn sheep.

Overnight: Whitefish

 

DAY 5 – Whitefish to Missoula (135 miles)

Just 35 miles south of Whitefish is the crystal clear waters of Flathead Lake and the picturesque small town of Bigfork which has been honoured as one of the 50 Great Towns in the West and brims with art galleries, fine restaurants and high-end boutiques. Then continue south to the artsy town of Missoula to visit the Smoke Jumper Visitor Center which tells the story of how elite, highly trained firefighters fight forest fires in remote areas throughout the country.

DAY 6 – Missoula to Butte (145 miles)

Take a scenic drive to Philipsburg, one of the ‘Prettiest Painted Places in America’ to mine for authentic Montana sapphires! Then head for Butte. Located on the Continental Divide, Butte was once one of the most thriving cities in the west due to the highly prosperous deposits of copper that reside in the surrounding mountains. Explore the historical downtown area which includes the Copper King Mansion, the former residence of copper tycoon William Andrews Clark. Learn about the old mining history at the World Museum of Mining.

Overnight: Butte

 

DAY 7 – Butte to West Yellowstone (160 miles)

Start your day by visiting the Old West mining towns of Virginia City and Nevada City which have been restored to reflect the boom days when settlers and miners migrated to Montana in the late 1800s. Take time to explore the historic shops, theatres and houses. Late afternoon, make your way to the gateway town of West Yellowstone; get an early night ready for a full and exciting day tomorrow!

DAYS 8 & 9 - Yellowstone National Park

Get an early start for the nation’s first national park, Yellowstone - best known for the geysers, hot springs and mud pots that make it one of the most active geothermal areas on the planet. The awe-inspiring landscape covers 3,000 square miles with over 10,000 thermal features and hundreds of animal species. Popular sites include Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone Lake, Old Faithful, Midway Geyser Basin, Norris Geyser Basin, Lamar and Hayden Valleys and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone with its inspirational view of Lower Falls. Delve deeper into the wilderness with a guided wolf or bear tracking tour!

Overnight: West Yellowstone

 

DAY 10 – West Yellowstone to Bozeman (90 miles)

Return flight from Bozeman
