Itinerary

DAY 1 – Fly to Salt Lake City, Utah

Arrive in Salt Lake City and collect your rental car

Overnight: Salt Lake City

 

DAY 2 – Salt Lake City to Bear Lake to Pocatello, Idaho (240 miles)

Start your roadtrip by taking in the beautiful Logan Canyon Scenic Byway to Bear Lake State Park. This 20 mile freshwater lake, known as the Caribbean of the Rockies, is a haven for water sports enthusiasts - water ski, paddle or scuba dive the brilliantly blue waters. If you prefer dry land then enjoy a stroll or cycle to admire the scenery, or simply relax on the sandy shores. Continue your journey on to highway 30, stopping for a soak in the natural steaming waters of Lava Hot Springs, before settling in to your hotel.

DAY 3 – Lava Hot Springs to Twin Falls, Idaho (185 miles)

Today, visit City of Rocks with its towering spires and unique rock formations. Stretch your legs on the hiking trails and enjoy the inspirational old western views. Continue towards Twin Falls to witness the thundering Shoshone Falls, dubbed as the ‘Niagara of the West’ and standing 45 feet taller than Niagara Falls itself. She is a very impressive sight!

DAY 4 – Twin Falls to Ketchum, Sun Valley (175 miles)

This morning, head towards the Sawtooth Mountains, visiting Craters of the Moon National Monument, formed during eight major eruptive periods between 15,000 and 2,000 years ago. It contains three major lava fields which are some of the best examples of rift cracks in the world. Continue your scenic drive further into the mountains to Sun Valley area which boasts nearly one million acres or surrounding wilderness. Spend the night at Sun Valley resort, the birthplace of the ski chairlift and home to old Hollywood Glamour, alternatively stay in the mountain town of nearby Ketchum.

DAY 5 – Sun Valley to Boise (190 miles)

Enjoy the incredible mountain scenery as you drive from Sun Valley to Stanley. Along the way stop at Sawtooth National Recreation Area and Redfish Lake for epic views of mountain peaks and ice blue lakes. Between Stanley and Boise make a stop at Kirkham Hot Springs for a relaxing dip in the natural geothermal pools and waterfalls. On arrival in Boise, relax about town with a drink or two and sample one of Boise’s eclectic restaurants on Eighth Street.

DAY 6 – Boise

Spend the day exploring the state capital of Boise. Take one of the Boise Township Tours, stop by the Boise Art Museum, or visit the newly re-opened Idaho State Museum for a fascinating insight into the story of Idaho. Spare some time for the indoor/outdoor World Center for Birds of Prey to meet eagles, owls, vultures, hawks and falcons.

DAY 7 – Boise to McCall (110 miles)

Travel north to the town of McCall along the Payette River Scenic Byway enjoying the mountain views, forests, lakes and valleys. This laid back town on the shores of Payette Lake is surrounded by mountains and forests. Take a swim in the lake or enjoy the alpine views on a cruise. Or head into Ponderosa State Park for spectacular views across the lake from Osprey Cliffs Overlook.

Overnight: McCall

 

DAY 8 – McCall to Riggins (60 miles)

Today is the day to discover your adventurous side. Take a thrilling whitewater rafting trip on one of the most popular stretches of the Salmon River. Or go jet boating through the rapids of Hells Canyon which divides Oregon and Idaho and is the deepest river gorge in North America. Spend the night in Riggins, nestled deep in a canyon at the confluence of the Salmon River and the Little Salmon River.

Overnight: Riggins

 

DAY 9 – Riggins to Coeur d’Alene (225 miles)

Continue your travels north to the Nez Perce National Historic Park, one of Idaho’s most important Native American attractions. The park’s 38 sites tell the story of the Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) people – the Lewis & Clark Expedition considered them the most hospitable tribe they met. Then follow in the footsteps of Lewis & Clark on the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway to Coeur d’Alene, surrounded by dozens of lakes left behind by the glaciers from the ice age. Take a leisurely bike ride along the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes bike path and watch the sun set and moon rise over Lake Coeur d’Alene.

DAY 10 to 14 – Coeur d’Alene to Seattle, Washington (320 miles)

Complete your trip driving across Washington State to Seattle and spend some time in the city before you return flight.
