Capital Region - Frederick and Alexandria

Frederick & Alexandria, Capital Region USA (by Paula Cross)

Although we were heading north to Frederick we took a detour south to visit the beautiful town of Alexandria, just half an hour from Washington DC.

Located on the Potomac River, it's known for its Old Town, brick sidewalks and well preserved 18th & 19th century buildings.

Frederick is the gateway to western Maryland with its mountainous views and "clustered spires" skyline and is best known for its civil war history and its 40-block historic district.

We started at the visitor centre to gain some knowledge about the area before walking along Carroll Creek to the historic centre, admiring the many 3D street murals enroute.

Visit Frederick ensured that we made the most of our visit to the area and with so much to do and see in the town and surrounding area you should definitely plan to stay a few days to fit in as much as possible.

National Museum of Civil War Medicine, Frederick Keys Baseball game, open air concerts, Cunningham Falls State Park, Roddy Road Covered Bridge, National Shrine of St Elizabeth Ann Seton, Catoctin Mountain Orchard and Catoctin Breeze Vineyard, to name just a few, along with the many Civil War.

You're spoiled for choice by the many places to eat and drink including Firestone's Culinary Tavern and Brewers Alley Restaurant where we enjoyed some fantastic food!

For those of you with a sweet tooth you will find the most amazing chocolate in The Perfect Truffle!

Although there are no hotels in the centre of Frederick at the moment, there are a number of them located just 10 minutes away and the Home2 Suites by Hilton offer great value, especially for families with full self-catering facilities in the room and complimentary breakfast each morning
